The Bahamas expresses interest in World Youth

By Sheldon Longley ~ NG Sports Editor ~ slongley@nasguard.com: Just yesterday, it was mentioned in a Nassau Guardian article that with the completion of the new multi-million dollar national stadium, the Bahamas Association of Athletics Associations (BAAA) would be in a position to bid for prestigious regional meets. Well, it seems like the executives of that association are taking it a step further with a sudden interest in a more global undertaking.

COB athletes return home from Florida meet

The Thunderbird's legacy continues

By Fred Sturrup: The late Rev. W. Gentry McPhee will always be synonymous with sloop sailing in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. He crafted the legend of 'The Thunderbird', the prolific A-Class regatta sloop. During the 1960s, The Thunderbird, out of Mangrove Cay, Andros, was the biggest name in sloop sailing. Of course, Rolly Gray's Tida Wave rose to the popularity of The Thunderbird, but those two boats more than any other have been the key brand names in the history of Bahamian workboat/sloop regattas.

Two swim well ahead of CARIFTA

1600-meter men's relay program is imperative

By Fred Sturrup: Sunday in Doha, Qatar, the men's national 1,600 meters (m) relay team failed to renew its rivalry with the United States, when Andretti Bain pulled up on the second leg, eliminating The Bahamas. The United States went on to win the gold medal easily at the 13th International Association of Athletics Federations' World Indoor Championships. Injuries are most often not bargained for. It was a difficult pill for Bahamians to swallow. It would be just so nice to be able to capitalize on all of our opportunities to a maximum at international events, but, the world doesn't turn that way.

Triple jumper Frank Rutherford captured the bronze in Indianapolis. After him, the list grew with several Bahamians winning two indoor medals. The Bahamas is now a medal presence, always on the world indoor stage.

BSF ratifies 36-member CARIFTA team

Rodgers to compete in Orlando

The ninth grade student of Queen's College has been a member of Nassau 'Nastics, The Bahamas' oldest gymnastics club, for three years. She plans to make her competition debut at the 2010 Leprechaun Classic in Orlando, Florida, which takes place March 13 and 14.

Roy Van Putten died in his native Aruba reportedly from heart complications. A strong-minded no-nonsense individual, Roy was not always in agreement with some of his area boxing colleagues but he forged ahead nevertheless, mending relationships when possible but steadfastly focused on propelling the sport he loved so much and working consistently to provide advancement opportunities for Caribbean boxers.

Swimmers relocate to the smaller pools

Sports minister knocks demolition decision

By Fred Sturrup ~ NG Associate Editor ~ frederick@nasguard.com: While giving his report to the House of Assembly, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Charles Maynard on Monday questioned the decision of the previous administration, headed by Perry Christie, to demolish two very important facilities. Christie's Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) government with Neville Wisdom as the sports minister had the Andre Rodgers Baseball Diamond and the Churchill Tener-Knowles Softball Stadium demolished. The two much-used competition areas were stables of the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre.

With the will to win ingrained in them, the Falcons turned back every sensational effort presented to them by the C.C. The final score was 81-80 and the one-point difference told the story of a resilient squad that listened attentively to Head Coach Norris Bain and brought glory to Grand Bahama.

Arianna wins first conference title

By BSF WRITER ~ For the Guardian: Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace saw that she could win and when she pushed off that last wall she went for it and ended the 100 fly as the South Eastern Conference's (SEC) Champion on Friday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium at the University of Georgia. The Bahamian sophomore swimmer represented the Auburn Tigers in the women's 100 butterfly final at the 2010 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships.

The general nonchalance is disturbing. Boothe attained success in an international event. He defeated foreigners and fellow Bahamian athletes. The event itself was endorsed and sanctioned by both the Association of International Marthons (AIM) and the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF). Marathon Bahamas took the stage as an authentic event.

Baseball future looks bright for Pindling

Small in stature like his dad and late granddad, young Pindling has always been a wiz of an infielder and making contact with the pitched ball has gotten better for him each year.
