Bahamian martial artists return from Orlando

By KENT BAZARD ~ For the Guardian:

A small team of eight Bahamian Kung Fu athletes went to Orlando recently to compete in the 11th International Chinese Martial Arts Championships (ICMAC). They were led by fourth degree black belt Lynden French and first degree black belt Kent Bazard, and are students of the Bain Sung Institute 'Four Winds of Kung Fu' an internationally recognized system founded by a Bahamian Grand Master, Kenneth P. Lewis.

"The group did very well especially the children," said French. "They worked very hard."

Each of the athletes placed in at least one event and the team returned with three gold medals, two silver medals and four bronze medals. The team also won a grand title, 'Best performance by a foreign Kung Fu school', beating out teams from Italy, Puerto Rico, France and Canada.

The event was hosted by Master Nick Scrima, and is part of an international circuit. It hosted over 2000 competitors, judges and spectators at each event. This year, from December 4-6, The Bahamas is scheduled to host the first IMAC event outside of the United States at the Atlantis Resort and will become host for the yearly World Championships starting in 2010.

"The Bahamas ICMAC will be a world-class Kung Fu competition and the finale on the international circuit," explained Bazard. "The circuit will include Washington, Las Vegas, San Diego, Japan, Italy and Costa Rica.

"All the competitors will come to our country for the grand championships. The Four Winds System hopes to win the support of local sponsors and the Ministry of Sports. Martial Arts sports is the fastest growing competitive sporting event today. We need support to make an international impression of the talent we have here in The Bahamas. This December though, will be another chance to prove to the world that we are small, but we are the best."
