Mark Knowles is set to play in Wimbledon

By KELSIE JOHNSON ~ NG Sports Reporter ~ kelsie@nasguard.com:

When the prestigious Wimbledon Tennis Championships gets underway today in Great Britain, Bahamian tennis professional player Mark Knowles and his doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi from India will take to the court with the reality of not winning a title together so far this season.

The Wimbledon Championships is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is contested on grass courts. Seeded number four in the men's doubles draw, the Bahamian/Indian duo will take on the unseeded team of Kevin Anderson and Somdev Devvarman in the first round of the competition. If they are successful in their first round bid, the team will face the winner of the match between Phillip Petzschner and Alexander Peya and the team of Petr Pala and Radek Stepanek.

Both Knowles and Bhupathi will play in the mixed doubles division as well. This is the third Grand Slam tournament of the year, the first was the Australian Open held in January where Knowles and Bhupathi made the finals, but lost to American identical twins Mike and Bob Bryan, 2-6, 7-5 and 6-0. At the second Grand Slam tournament, the French Open, Knowles and Bhupathi were eliminated in the third round by the team of Jose Acasuso and Maximo Gonzalez. The fourth Grand Slam tournament is the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, New York, in September.

Despite not having won a title this season, Knowles and Bhupathi are still ranked high on the men's doubles team list. The team has accumulated 2,535 points in 11 tournaments played. Sitting at the top of the chart are the Bryans with 5,665 points, followed by Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic with 5,110 points. The third spot belongs to Lukas Dlouhy and Leander Paes, 3,740 points over 10 tournaments.

Individually, Knowles is ranked eighth with 5,800 points in 24 tournaments while Bhupathi is ninth with 5,540 points.
