Government softball players ready to shine

By FRED STURRUP ~ NG Associate Editor ~ frederick@nasguard.com:

The Bahamas Government Departmental Softball Association is not the mainstream league of the sport, but its organizational concept remains the standard for others to emulate.

Led by Thora Sweeting, the association has an innovative program and is a leading draw for sports fans. More so than any other sports entity, the association has made the excellent crossover to family gatherings for the refreshing environment rather than just to watch the play afield. It's the comfort zone the association affords attendees that counts most.

During this pivotal social period in the country, Sweeting and company stand out as a collective beacon for attracting hundreds of young Bahamians (and older ones) every weekend during seasonal play, providing them with a safe, healthy, and entertaining option. This Saturday at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex, the special attraction will be all-star play. According to Sweeting, games have been scheduled in four categories.

At noon, action will begin with a game for children. At 1:00 p.m., the former players will get another moment in the spotlight. The serious play will begin at 3:00 p.m. when the female all-stars hit the field. The men will get started at 4:00 p.m. Expected to be on hand for the presentation of awards at 6:00 p.m., is Desmond Bannister, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture.

What's the association's secret? According to President Sweeting, it's a combination of togetherness and good competition.

"We've have just always been like one big family. There is the kind of togetherness that fostered a connection with all the families of the players as well as their friends. We just get along well together. I tell you, it's like a magnet. People keep coming out because they enjoy our games and the whole softball scene. We always made it a must to go all out so that they kept that good feeling and eventually, the fans got so attached, it became like their own family. On top of that, the competition over the years became quite good. It's much more than just recreation when the players go on the field," said Sweeting.

Yes, spectators get the whole package. In the early years of the association, for most players, it was just an opportunity to get in some exercise, to interact with friends and have fun. Then, the competitive edge got sharper and now, the quests for bragging rights is ever present.

I salute the government softball family. They form an important sports pillar in our society. Happy All-Star Weekend!
