    Sharks devour the Sigma Brackettes

By DAHALIA SMITH ~ NG Sports Reporter ~ dahalia@nasguard.com:

The New Providence Softball Association (NPSA) women's champions, the Proper Care Pool Lady Sharks, sports an even 3-3 win/loss record, after taking a huge chomp out of the Sigma Brackettes, beating them 11-4 this past Saturday night. That victory at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex puts the Sharks at 1-1 against the Brackettes this year. Alex Taylor was the winning pitcher. Other wins recorded by the Sharks so far this season were over the Bommer G. Swingers (twice) while losses were against the Wildcats (twice). Lady Sharks Head Coach Stephen 'Bishop' Beneby said there is much room for improvement.

"That victory against the Brackettes was a good one. We really needed that win as our team is just beginning to fall into shape. All of the players are starting to come out to practice and we are now ready to roll. As far as Alex is concerned, she is still not where she needs to be, being one of the premier pitchers in the league. Proper Care Pool goes according to the pitchers. If the pitcher is pitching, Proper Care can't lose," said Beneby.

As for the losses, Beneby noted that lack of cohesiveness was a major contributor.

"It's still early in the season and we are just feeling out our team, so from here on out you are going to see a whole new Proper Care Pool team once we take the field. In addition, if our pitchers throw strikes there is no team in this league that can beat us. We have a very good defensive team. We have to play the Wildcats three more times and once Proper Care Pool comes to play, we will beat them in all of those encounters," continued Beneby.

With the addition of three new players this season, the team's chances of making the final four in a bid to retain its title is even greater, according to Coach Beneby.

"This year we got rid of some players and made three key additions namely Dawn Forbes and sisters Sharnell Symonette and Cleo Symonette. Sharnell is expected to make the pitching staff stronger. She throws strikes and is a versatile player. Also, Dawn is a very good hitter as she has been ranked in the top two or three in this department over the past four years. Cleo adds a lot to the catching department, she is very good behind the plate. When Debbie McClure, who is a police officer, has to work we can rely on Cleo," explained Beneby.

The Lady Sharks are scheduled to play again Tuesday, July 14. The other game held this past Saturday, saw Robin Hood edge the Thompson's Heavy Equipment Outlaws, 11-10. Play resumes tonight with a double-header.
