    International Designer Spotlight: Salvatore Ferragamo

Throughout history inspiring stories have been told of overcoming obstacles and the strength of the human spirit. These stories exist at the core of the glamorous fashion industry as well. Strip away the red carpets and flashing lights, before the fifth avenue flagship boutiques and celebrity followings, many designers struggle to break through for the love of fashion. The Ferragamo legacy is one such story. Widowed at age 38, Wanda Ferragamo was left with six children to raise alone with no formal work experience. A housewife since marrying Salvatore Ferragamo at age 18, Wanda knew nothing of the shoe business he had built. After 15 days of mourning his death she bravely resolved to honor him by continuing with his dream.

Writing Institute for Bahamians begins after Monday opening

By STAFF WRITER ~ For the Guardian: Thirty years ago a Caribbean American writer, Audre Lorde, told audiences that "poetry is not a luxury" but the words we need in order to survive and build the worlds in which we want to live. The founders of the Bahamas Writers Summer Institute, Bahamian writers Helen Klonaris and Marion Bethel, have created a writing program which believes in writing as vital to the survival and growth of Bahamian communities.

    Shake hands with your enemy

Now My Friend, today I'm going to give you a difficult task as your assignment, as you pursue your ultimate goal of striving to become perfect. And what is that difficult task some may say, with a rather worried look on their furrowed brow. My Friend, I want you to follow the instructions given in today's title, and thus 'Shake hands with your enemy'. Just imagine for a minute here today, what a very positive impact it would have on our present day world, if it was possible to get literally everyone around the globe to shake hands with their enemy. In effect, we'd have a world for the very first time at peace, a world where people allowed the love of God WITHIN them, to shine forth to unite with the inner Divine Love WITHIN their former enemies.

Sea lion turns one at Dolphin Encounters

By THEA RUTHERFORD ~ Guardian National Correspondent ~ thea@nasguard.com: Slick and sweet, one-year-old Milo slipped into the waters of one of the small coves at Dolphin Encounters' Blue Lagoon Island last Tuesday, and onto the platform where he would celebrate his first birthday before well-wishers who had gathered on the bleachers above. Three rows of children from one of the Dolphin Encounters summer programs joined staff members in singing happy birthday to the baby California sea lion. Milo rewarded the group with a few tricks, including gulping down the fish "candle" that topped his plastic and foam-covered "cake."

    The 'naughty' patient

By STAFF WRITER ~ Nassau Guardian: If there's one thing Samuel Jones' doctor has drilled into him, it's that he must take his seizure medication daily at the same time, to ensure that the meds remain at a consistent level in his system to control any epileptic onsets. But this isn't something the 40-year old adheres to. He admits to not taking his medication for sometimes 24 hours at a time, and then doubling up to ensure that his ailment stays controlled.

    Ask the doctor

Dear Dr. Eneas, Is there anything I can take to help me lose weight and not interfere with my thyroid medication. I am on Armor Thyroid and take 90 mgs. — one a day and 120 the next day. I took the radioactive iodine in 2001 to kill my thyroid. I was 120 pounds and am now 185 pounds and only five feet tall. I would really like some help with this. Thank you so much for any help you may be able to give.

    Urinary stones and your pet

The formation of stones (calculi or uroliths) along the urinary tract is called urolithiasis. These stones can be found anywhere along the urinary tract including the kidneys, ureters (outflow tract from the kidney to the bladder), and the bladder itself. The formation of stones in the bladder is the most common type of urinary calculi in the dog and cat. In order for urinary stones to form, the urine must contain sufficiently high levels of urolith forming minerals, a favorable urine pH & time in the urinary tract. There are many causes of urolithiasis which include but are not limited to:

    Vengeance is counter-productive

Here's a most important question which I want every single member of my reading audience to answer with complete candor. Have you ever said to yourself, when someone said something terrible to you, I'll get him or her for that, I'll make absolutely sure that they pay for all of the hurt which they've caused me....I'll make sure that they get theirs? Now My Friend, I believe that if you're being completely honest here today, you'll have to admit to the fact, that in the past you were inclined to be a rather vengeful type of individual, always trying to get even with those whom you perceived did you wrong. Now, here's another question. Have you grown up spiritually, to the point where you no longer engage in this kind of infantile behavior, of wanting to get back at anyone who hurt you in the past, for as the title of this article puts it 'Vengeance is counter-productive'. Now some may say with a rather puzzled look on their face, what am I supposed to do, how am I supposed to behave with those whom I perceive have deliberately tried to hurt or harm me in some way?

    Exercise and spirituality

Over the years people have relentlessly sought to answer the question: Why should I exercise? To fully understand or answer this question, we all need to dig a little deeper and understand ourselves spiritually. What do we believe? Why do we believe what we believe? And, can what I believe sustain me through the physical aspect of exercise? The answers have nothing to do with our religious background, or with belonging to a particular denomination. It simply questions and challenges how we handle certain situations whether we have a belief system in place or not. We are under a divine obligation to take care of our bodies, soul and spirit.

    Fighting breast cancer

By STAFF WRITER ~ Nassau Guardian ~ On the heels of the resoundingly successful "the little pink party" honor your heroine fashion and beauty event, KhanAali Media Group (KMG) and Bahamas Surgical First Assistant Ltd. (BSFA) paid a visit to The Cancer Society of the Bahamas to share the "little pink magic" from their recent event.

    Walking a very thin line

By Chakara Bennett ~ Guardian Summer Intern: Is it ever okay to date your friend's former love interest? This is an ethical question many people face on a daily basis, and one that Olivia Peterson (name changed), 22, recently found out the hard way has many consequences. Four weeks ago, Peterson began dating the ex-boyfriend of one of her friends, from whom her boyfriend had separated four months prior.

Man on the street: Would you date your friend's ex?

As the topic of whether it is ever okay to date a friend's ex weighed heavily on our minds, The Nassau Guardian took to the streets to find out how people felt about this dilemma, and whether they thought it was right or wrong.

    Dressing your apple-shaped body

Here is the dilemma! Many women feel intimidated and even fearful of shopping because they are unhappy with their bodies and don't have a clear understanding of their specific body types. To make the issue even worse, many are unaware of how to choose styles that effectively diminish their problem areas for an overall flattering look. But what everyone needs to remember is that clothes are our friends, and knowing your body type and how to effectively dress it takes the guesswork and stress out of shopping. Dressing for your shape is the ultimate fashion rule — followed by ensuring that your clothes are tailored to your body and fit well. A few weeks ago, I addressed the topic of dressing the inverted triangle body shape and ways to play up the shape's best assets while visually hiding the problem areas. This week I'm focusing on dressing the apple shape.

    Developing a new lawn

Did you know that a new lawn can be developed from live stems (sprigs), solid sod or plugs. Your local nursery should offer solid sod that should be free of weeds and pests. Preparing the site: You should always have a plan of your proposed law. Proceed to dig the area and remove large stones and other foreign material. Add some top soil and organic materials such as peat moss to the area, rake the soil thoroughly and level the area. Sprinkle a granular fertilizer of (27-3-4) by using a lawn spreader to cover the area. The adding of peat moss to your soil is very useful as it enables our sandy soil to more efficiently retain moisture and the fertilizer elements.

    A dream realized

By Chakara Bennett ~ Guardian Summer Intern: Tyrina Neely took a major risk one year ago when she opened Primadona, a new business model to the country, which showcased affordable, luxury shopping and network, without the traditional brick and mortar retail location. That risk paid off.

How music videos influence your child

By SHAVAUGHN MOSS ~ Lifestyles Editor ~ shavaughn@nasguard.com: Alison Colebrooke, a mother of six knows all too well about having to police children and keep them on the straight and narrow as far as their listening to inappropriate music and music videos on television. From the time, they were able to understand right from wrong, she put her foot down, and she says it has worked for her. "But make no mistake, I do police them," said the 35-year-old, tourist sector employee, who is the mother of children who range in ages from six to 18.

    I move boldly forward

I sincerely hope and pray, that the phrase which is the title of this particular article 'I move boldly forward' becomes your daily mantra as you bravely step out each and every day, striving to meet your goals and objectives on the never-ending road to success. Yes My Friend, when you awake each morning hopefully after a refreshing, replenishing night's rest, you need to immediately establish a faith-filled frame of mind where you KNOW in a most positive way, that your efforts throughout the coming day will bear much fruit. There was a wonderful short piece written in the April edition of The Daily Word which is indeed most relevant to today's important theme; it reads as follows "I am ready and willing to let God be in charge of my life. Exhilarated by the journey that lies ahead, I know I am moving forward to unlimited opportunities. God expresses wisdom and life through me, guiding me every step of the way.

    What causes hairballs in cats?

During a cat's daily grooming regimen, he may inadvertently swallow loose hair, which generally passes through the digestive system into the cat's stool. Some hair can remain, however, and collect in the stomach or small intestine, causing the cat to hack, gag or retch until he vomits the offending detritus. The hair that is vomited can appear matted or tubular in shape.

    Summer rules for the children

Parents, do you need some help with your children this summer? Children of all ages are full of energy that seems never to abate. They are also adventurous, bold, and creative. I would encourage you to utilize these gifts to make a wonderful summer vacation time. What is really important in having a meaningful summer vacation in your house is to have sensible and practical rules for everyone. The mistake many parents make is to eliminate rules during the summer break. They reason that their children worked so hard during the school year, it is okay to have no boundaries for just a few short months. That's a great mistake to make.

    'Everything comes around'

By STAFF WRITER ~ Nassau Guardian: Bahamian attorney, banker and writer Shawn Forbes is adding yet another notch to his belt of literary achievement.

Discovering the joys of the sea

By THEA RUTHERFORD ~ Guardian National Correspondent ~ thea@nasguard.com: With a sweet-faced little boy on its cover, "We, Sea," a book of photographs and words by children in South Eleuthera, is the magic of the ocean through the eyes of kids who have recently learned to swim. Children splashing together with bright smiles or wide-eyed in goggles underwater, emerald sunshine and glassy shallow seas color the book, part of a project by Jennifer Galvin, PhD., a doctor of environmental health whose work examines the intersection of medicine, public health and marine science.

    Forget the tie

By THEA RUTHERFORD ~ Guardian National Correspondent ~ thea@nasguard.com: The countdown to Father's Day is on. In less than a week you'll face the task of showing dad how much you care, and the list of ways to bring a smile to his face hardly seems to waver. The search for the perfect gift may result in an awesome grill, a new flat screen television, trusty power tools or that special polka dot necktie.

Many herb flowers are attractive and edible

    Q. We came from Europe and are interested in growing plants with edible flowers. Can you suggest some plants, and where do we go to shop for them? — C.R., Westward Villas

    Practicing the presence

Whilst listening to Dr. Paul Masters President of The University of Metaphysics on the internet, as he conducted his weekly service last Sunday from The University Church in Las Vegas; he reminded me of a book which I read many years ago titled 'Practicing the Presence' written by Brother Lawrence. Brother Lawrence was a Monk who decided, that whatever task he was doing, he was doing it for the ultimate glory of God; thus he spent his days really enjoying what he did, whether it was washing dishes in the monastery kitchen, or working in the garden, he dedicated every task to God, as he continually prayed throughout the day. He never lost sight of the fact, that wherever he was and whatever he was doing, God was there, as indeed he always is in our lives too. In other words, his life became one continual prayer, which is the way it should be, as far as I'm concerned.

Avoid shoe battles with your child

By Chakara Bennett ~ Guardian Summer Intern: As a parent, do you often wonder why your child outgrows his shoes so quickly or why he gets blisters on his feet or can't stand comfortably for long in his new shoes that you know are the "correct" size?

    The good, the bad ugly

By SHAVAUGHN MOSS ~ Lifestyles Editor ~ shavaughn@nasguard.com: With the World Health Organization declaring a H1N1 (swine flu) pandemic on Thursday after more than 28,000 cases worldwide and 144 deaths reported according to the Associated Press, general practitioner Dr. James Constantakis says this is a good thing.

    Ask the doctor

Dear Dr. Eneas, A few weeks ago I had temporary dental crowns put in. They hurt pretty badly everyday and I was told by my dentist to take Advil. Well, the new crowns came in but they did not fit right. In the meantime, I have to take a pain reliever to tolerate the pain. Is it safe to take ibuprofen everyday for three weeks?

How Kennel Cough affects your dog

Kennel Cough, also known as Infectious Tracheobronchitis or Bordatella, is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection that affects dogs worldwide. There are several different organisms that can cause Kennel Cough, but the most common pathogens (disease causing organisms) involved are Parainfluenza virus, Bordatella bronchiseptica and Mycoplasma bacteria, as well as Canine adenovirus type 2. The most common viral agent to cause this disease is Parainfluenza virus and the most common bacterial agent responsible is Bordatella bacteria. While just one of these pathogens can cause an animal to suffer from clinical symptoms, they more often-than-not occur in combination with one or more different pathogens.

Life can be endured or enjoyed

Believe you me, there's a whole lot of absolute truth contained in the title of today's article. There are, I believe, far too many people spread throughout this great big world of ours, who are obviously not really enjoying life as they should. So, in effect, these kinds of people are just existing, as they endeavor to endure the sad events taking place in their lives, each and every day. I honestly believe, that our Spiritual Father, our Creator, God intended life to be something most enjoyable for all of us. So, if that's true, and I honestly believe it is; well then, how come so many people appear not to be enjoying their everyday life? Well, I believe there are several reasons. The first reason why some people are not really enjoying life as they should be, is simply because they don't know and fully appreciate who and what they are in reality, which is an awesomely talented 'Child of God'. Once we fully grasp this undeniable TRUTH about ourselves, we should be extremely joyful as we tackle our daily chores.

    The silent scream

Who can speak for the little children who are raped, abused, neglected, or abandoned? What can we do to protect the weak and innocent?

Miss Universe contestants to get crash course in things Bahamian

By Chakara Bennett ~ Guardian Summer Intern: It's going to be a crash course in things Bahamian when the contestants in the 2009 Miss Universe pageant arrive in The Bahamas. From a visit to the Ardastra Gardens — which likes to boast that it is the wildest place in town — where they will entertain and interact with children from some of the local children's hostels, to tours of Fort Charlotte and and the Clifton Heritage Site, and a stop at Arawak Cay, the 70-plus beauty queens will get their fill of true Bahamian culture.

Beat the heat with cool summer fabrics

I was watching the new television show "The Fashion Show" this weekend and one of the challenges for aspiring designers was to decipher higher quality designer pieces from lower quality bargain brands where both items looked very similar to the naked eye. On the show, the designers were able to recognize the higher end pieces, which for the common man isn't usually case. But one thing to always remember is that aside from construction and the details — the easiest way to tell a well-made, high-end garment from a lesser priced one is in the choice of fabric.

    Are you just waiting?

I guess that a whole lot of my readers are thinking to themselves right now, having just read to-day's title 'Are you just waiting?'; am I waiting for what D. Paul?....could you perhaps be a bit more specific. Well My Friend, I'm just here today to highlight Success Principles, you'll have to fill in the specifics. In other words, what I'm here today to tell you loud and clear is simply this. If there's something in life which you truly desire with all your heart and soul, believe you me when I tell you, it is not going to come to you. Oh no, those who are immensely successful in life, are those who aggressively, and indeed persistently pursue their goals and objectives. Yes indeed, if you're just idly sitting around day after day hoping that something good will happen to you, believe me, you're in for a rude awakening, you're in for a really rough ride.

Pruning plants makes them produce more fruit and flowers

Some reasons for pruning your plants are to help young trees or shrubs develop proper structure, and remove dead, diseased or unwanted growth. This may include thinning the tree branches to let in more air and light, to keep plants in a desired size, to increase the amount of fruits and flowers, to alter shapes to your liking, to prevent future troubles like wind breakage and too heavy fruit crops, to rejuvenate old plants. You can also lessen transplanting shock by cutting off some of the branches to balance loss of roots. Having the right tools: Without the right tools, no pruning job can be successful. First, you need to have a good pair of pruning shears — a hedge shear and lopping shears. For large cuts you will need a saw. Remember to have at all times, pruning paint or sealant to seal all the wounds on the plants in order to stop disease entering the cuts.

    Friendships renewed

By STAFF WRITER ~ Nassau Guardian: Friendships were renewed and the good ole' days remembered. For one weekend, the 1969 graduates of St. Augustine's College were encouraged to forget about their problems, their misfortunes and busy schedules and enjoy the company of old friends at the weekend of activities planned to celebrate the 40th year of their high school graduation.

    Waging war together

By THEA RUTHERFORD ~ Guardian National Correspondent ~ thea@nasguard.com: "Surreal" is a word that comes up a lot when Shane Dean talks about what happened to his wife Kera last year. Her three words to him, "Something isn't right," one morning in June 2008, triggered a series of medical tests, tears and trials that would take the newlyweds into the beginning of this year, thanking God for their family, friends and each other.

    Ask the doctor

Dear Dr. Eneas, I am a 26-year-old female, and my body is always warm, even from childhood. It is like I always have a fever. What could be the reason for this? I don't have any other disease. I drink lots of water and fluids, but still my body is hot. I am also having very dry skin. Is it due to warmness in my body? Is something wrong with me?

Corneal ulcers in dogs and cats

The cornea is the clear, shiny, outer capsule of your pets' eye. It is comprised of three very thin layers — the outer most is called the epithelium; the stroma comprises the middle layer and Descmet's membrane is the inner most layer. The cornea derives its nutrients from the tears rather than from blood vessels, unlike most other tissues in the human body. The cornea is an extremely delicate structure and can be scratched, scraped or ulcerated easily. An erosion of the epithelial layer of the cornea is called a corneal erosion or abrasion. A corneal ulcer is when the erosion goes through the entire epithelium into the stromal layer of the cornea. If the corneal erosion goes through the Descmet's membrane, then it is referred to as a Descmetocele.

    That 'on the brink' feeling

As I'm writing this particular article, I'm in the final stages of launching a brand new website business venture with a partner, which I just KNOW will be immensely successful. I've spent months visualizing, planning, and working with my business associate, who has been very helpful in assisting me in finally getting this new venture ready for business. So, at the moment, I'm full of a whole lot of excitement at the prospect of this new business taking off and being extremely successful. As I pondered this thought, I came up with the title of this article 'That 'on the brink' feeling', as I'm daily full to the brim with positive feelings of hope for the immense good, which I am certain my new business venture will bring to many. I heard a Minister of Religion say on television a few weeks ago; if you wish to succeed in life, do something which blesses a whole lot of people. As I know that my new website CorporateMotivation.org is going to daily bless a whole lot of people, through my unique Annual Daily Staff Motivation Program, it gives me a good feeling inside. So my 'on the brink' feeling is a good one, a feeling of great anticipation and indeed excitement.
