Don't give up — get up!

By D Paul Reilly, For The Guardian

I heard a Minister on television utter the phrase which is in fact the title of this article 'Don't give up — get up!'. What a really important message is contained in the title for all of us. I've written about it many times in the past in these articles, the only way in which anyone can be a loser in life is by quitting, by giving up on one's dreams for the future. The sad thing of course is, that when we give up in the pursuit of a particular goal because of difficulties encountered along the way, the only person we're giving up on is ourselves....how very sad!

Now, I don't know about you My Friend, but believe you me, I have failed in life more times than I can remember. But one thing that I never do is quit. Oh sure, when you initially fail at anything be it in business, matrimony, or any other facet of our life, it does indeed hurt and perhaps slows you down a bit.

However, from my own personal perspective, I've always managed to eventually regroup after a failure of any kind, and then set out once again in the pursuit of my goals and objectives with renewed vigor. This is the kind of behavior which ultimately brings a person the success and happiness he or she desires.

I'm sure that we've all heard the following simple phrase over and over again 'Winners never quit, and Quitters never win'. Oh how true that is, and whilst we're referring to familiar phrases which contain great lessons in living, let's not forget the following gem 'Winners are simply losers who didn't quit'. Yes My Friend, the next time you temporarily fail and fall down 'Don't give up — get up!'. If you keep doing this religiously, you'll ultimately be immensely successful....I guarantee it!

Some of the greatest success stories the world has ever known contain a whole lot of instances of failure in them. Take for example, one of the greatest Presidents The United States of America ever had, in my humble opinion, and indeed in the opinion of most learned people around the globe, Abraham Lincoln.

His early life was full of failure. As a young man, he went bankrupt twice in business. He had trouble with his marriage and with his children. After entering the field of politics, he actually failed in some nine different elections. However, the most important lesson for all of us to learn here today, is that he didn't quit in the pursuit of his dreams, just because he failed many, many times. When he fell down, he didn't 'Give up', instead he 'Got up', got back in the race, and finally was elected to the top office in his country, that of President. What a great, inspiring, and True Story!
