BreakSk8 and Live In Color bring the heat

BreakSk8 and Live in Color, two of the groups that wowed the world on the television show "America's Best Dance Crew" will be in town to wow you at the after show of "Steppin on da Shores 2" this weekend.

Kenny Mackey, an organizer of the step show, confirmed in an exclusive interview with The Nassau Guardian that the two groups, which they were keeping secret were indeed scheduled to appear.

You saw them clash on television, now you can see them battle after the Clash of the Greeks.

"We are doing two things. One is called hip hop Mardi Gras which is hip hop and urban funk and the second is called Class Act — this involves dressier clothes and classier hip hop," says Zedric Bembry, 36, leader of Live In Color which is located in Miami, and has been in existence for over 20 years.

But just who you will get to see in action remains to be seen, as the seven members that were showcased on the television show is just a "drop in the bucket" to the number of members in the actual group. "They were the seven chosen for that show" he said.

The group, which will roll into town on Saturday morning, has previously appeared on one other television dance show — ABC's Family Dance Fever which they won.

This will not be the group's first time in The Bahamas. Bembry says that they shot a video here but said this will be their first performance. He says they are excited, and plan to entertain within an inch of their lives.

BreakSk8 leader Shannon Anthony says they plan to perform some of the routines they did on "America's Best Dance Crew".

"These routines lasted for five minutes so we will probably do two five minute routines.

BreakSk8, the official skate team for the National Basketball Association (NBA) has traveled the world over doing shows and has been together since 2001. They will arrive on Saturday and will stay for two extra days soaking up the sun according to Shannon.

The two groups are expected to bring the heat to what is already a much talked about event.

Organizers says that the weekend will be rocking as international step teams like returning champs Philly Felines (Zeta Phi Beta) as well as Philly's Finest (Kappa Alpha Psi) and others as well as local step groups converge on Bahamian shores in the lead up to the Clash of the Greeks, one of the most anticipated events of the year.

Special performances will also be done by Junior Achievers step champions, Crank Dat Peace Dance Winners.

If you attended the first rendering of "Stepping on the Shores", and was impressed, then prepare to be swept away on a tide of stepping and dancing madness this weekend. This is expected to be an even bigger draw than last year's show, according to organizers.

Last year, the heat and the dust did not stop the people who turned out in droves to see the top step groups from having fun. Local and international groups battled it out for top honors and featured guests included a step team from the movie, "Stomp The Yard".

This year the main event is again slated for Arawak Cay Beach. The pre-party will kick off the three-day event tonight, at Pure Nightlife where the Greek organizations will have a "stroll off" — a dance competition to music for a cash prize, with the main event taking place on Saturday, May 10. The gates will open at 4 p.m., with the show getting underway at 5 p.m.

The step show weekend will conclude on Sunday, May 11 with a Wet Fete at Nirvana Beach, West Bay St., and they advise you to come prepared to get wet and bring your super soakers.

Once you come to any of the two events on Friday or Saturday the Wet Fete is free. Otherwise the cost for entry into the Wet Fete is $10. People who bring their super soakers can get in for half price.

Set to amp up the excitement at the show, will be a slew of local performers, including Bodine "Be" Johnson and Sammy Starr as well as Porter the Poet.

Part proceeds from the show will go to The Cancer Society of the Bahamas. The group donated money from last year's show to the AIDS Foundation.
