Reconnect at Palmetto Point Homecoming By KARAN MINNIS, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter
Bahamians never need an excuse to party and come May 7 - 12, the community members of Palmetto Point will be partying until the break of dawn as the Palmetto Point Homecoming event will be in full swing. A week of activities in celebration of their heritage and culture will take place and include a beach bash on Saturday May 10, and karaoke and live rake 'n scrape on Wednesday and Thursday nights at the homecoming site. "This event is really for any former resident to return home to spend time with their family members," says event organizer Hank Johnson. "It's all about spending time with family and friends and getting a chance to reconnect, but it's also a great event for visitors. They, the city Bahamians and foreign visitors, will get to see just what island life is like how we live what we do and what our life is like, and I know there's no better place to see that than in Palmetto Point." Over the years, this event has grown in terms of popularity and even though it's not as large as the regattas, The Brilanders, Ancient Man, Visage, Elon Moxey, and Count Bernadino have all made it a point to perform at the event. In the past, party-goers indulged at a floating bar, which proved to be a hit, as they gave away free shots, and this year it's pretty much expected to be the same. For the youngsters, a mini-fishing regatta, fashion shows, sail-a-ways, and live band performances with The Brilanders will take place, to make the event truly family friendly.
