'Adults face prosecution for failing to report campus sex'

The adults who failed to report an act of underage sex on a private school campus could face legal trouble, according to Chief Supt. Glen Miller.

Administrators at the private school in eastern New Providence found out about the coupling of the 12th-grade boy, 17, and a 13-year-old ninth grader from the school's surveillance video, well-placed sources told The Guardian. The incident took place last month during an after-school fundraiser.

But, according to police, the adults had a duty to report the matter as the girl could not legally consent to the act. The age of consent is 16.

Miller, the head of the Central Detective Unit, told The Guardian yesterday: "It's an offense for an adult who knows about underage sex not to report it. You must report those things. The act is clear."

The 12th-grader was suspended for a week and stripped of his position as a prefect as punishment for the incident. But if legal action is taken, the boy, if convicted, could spend a maximum of six months in prison.

Miller was unable to give an update on the status of the police investigation into an alleged sexual affair between a female English teacher at a public school and a 12th grade student. The teacher was put on leave and the 12th-grader was also removed from his position as a prefect.
