Man denied bail on second rape charge

By ARTESIA DAVIS ~ Guardian Senior Reporter ~ artesia@nasguard.com:

A man who was previously charged with rape has been denied bail on a subsequent rape charge.

Lincoln Poitier, 48, of Gambier Village, is accused of having sex with an 18-year-old woman with whom he has a six-month-old son, between June 17 and June 19. Poitier is also accused of forcibly detaining the woman during the same period.

Poitier, who was barefoot and appeared to have difficulty walking, was not required to enter pleas to the allegations against him during an arraignment before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez.

Poitier seemed shocked at the charges and claimed that he lived with the complainant. But Magistrate Gomez replied, "You could still be charged with rape, even with your wife." According to the complainant, her relationship with Poitier has ended.

Magistrate Guillimina Archer will set a date for the start of a preliminary inquiry on July 7.

Prosecutor Sean Thurston objected to bail on the grounds that Poitier is currently awaiting trial in the Supreme Court on similar charges. A magistrate ordered Poitier to stand trial on charges that he kept a 14-year-old girl tied to a tree in bushes near the Lynden Pindling International Airport for five days in October 2004 and raped her.

The girl managed to escape and raise the alarm. Police did not take Poitier into custody until April 2007. He was shot in the back during his arrest near the Bahamas Telecommunications Company on John F. Kennedy Drive.
