      427 persons repatriated

By STAFF WRITER ~ Guardian News Desk:

The Bahamas Immigration Department repatriated 427 persons during the month of June.

According to a release, 108 of these persons were apprehended and repatriated to Haiti via Bahamasair, by the enforcement unit of The Bahamas Immigration Department in New Providence, Grand Bahama and the Family Islands, for working and residing in The Bahamas without proper documents. Of this number 74 were males, 20 were females and 14 were minors.

The release further noted that the Immigration Department continues to encourage voluntary repatriation in circumstances where an employer or a relative is financially able to assist, thus relieving the strain from government funds. During the period June 15-30, 105 persons were voluntarily repatriated from The Bahamas. Of this number 84 were Haitian nationals, 17 were Jamaican, and a Chinese, Peruvian and German national added another 3 persons respectively to the total.

The Immigration Department spent a total of $1,56,126.80 on repatriation efforts during the fiscal year 1st July 2008 to 30th June, 2009.
