Jury in Harl Taylor murder case selected

By ARTESIA DAVIS ~ Guardian Senior Reporter ~ artesia@nasguard.com:

The jury that will decide the fate of a 22-year-old man accused of the 2007 murder of international handbag designer Harl Taylor was selected yesterday. Troyniko McNeil, the son of Taylor's business partner Troy McNeil, is accused of fatally stabbing Taylor in an apartment above his design studio at Mountbatten House, West Bay Street. Taylor's body was discovered on November 18, 2007.

McNeil has remained in custody since he was deported to The Bahamas from Florida last August, after he overstayed the time permitted by immigration.

McNeil's case will be brought to trial in record time — just 10 months after he was charged with the murder on August 18, 2008. Prosecutors sped up the process by foregoing a preliminary hearing in the magistrates' court and sending the case to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment.

The trial is expected to last three weeks and 27 witnesses are expected to be called.

The jury selection process was delayed temporarily when bailiffs were ordered to find 10 more persons from which three alternate jurors would be chosen. Prosecutors will make their opening remarks at 2 p.m. today. McNeil is represented by Murrio Ducille. Neil Brathwaite and Darnell Dorsette appear for the prosecution.
