Cops accused of armed robbery, extortion attempt

By ARTESIA DAVIS ~ NG Senior Reporter ~ artesia@nasguard.com:

Four officers stationed at the Wulff Road Police Station were arraigned yesterday on armed robbery and attempted extortion charges.

Reserve Constable Jerimey Brennen, 21, of Antigua Street, Golden Gates Number 1, and Corporal Chester Atherley, 43, of Boatswain Road, are accused of taking Kifftino Davis to an automatic banking machine at gunpoint and forcing him to withdraw $600 from his account on June 20.

The following day, Constables Elkin Sherman and Freddie Lightbourn are accused of attempting to extort money from Davis.

Brennen and Atherley were not required to plead to the armed robbery charges when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez. Officers Sherman and Lightbourn entered not guilty pleas to the attempted extortion charge.

The officers have been suspended from their duties pending the completion of the case. That conclusion could come as early as Friday since Davis reportedly wants to withdraw the matter.

According to defense lawyer Ian Cargill, Davis was present and wanted to drop the case. Chief Inspector Samuel McKinney, the prosecutor, objected to the complaint being withdrawn at that time. McKinney asked for time to refer the matter to the Attorney General's Office.

Magistrate Gomez remanded Brennen and Atherley to the Central Police Station until Friday when they will return to court for a status hearing. Sherman and Lightbourne are also scheduled to return to court on that date. The court has extended their police bail until then.

Other lawyers in the case are Donna Dorsett-Major and Jomo Campbell.
