      Decomposing body found

By JASMIN BONIMY ~ Guardian Staff Reporter ~ jasmin@nasguard.com:

The decomposing body of a man was found in bushes off Skyline Drive yesterday morning, police reported.

Police at the scene said a report of a foul odor drew officers to the area around 10 a.m. yesterday.

When The Nassau Guardian arrived at the scene shortly after 11:30 a.m., nearly half a dozen uniformed officers were processing the scene.

Officers said they found the body behind bushes just feet away from the road, hidden behind a shallow embankment and a wall of leaves and dense shrubbery.

By 11:45 a.m. officers had pulled the body from the bushy area and placed it in a body bag near the roadway, where it drew the curiosity of passing motorists.

According to police, initial investigations indicate there was no foul play in the man's death.

Police said they were classifying the incident as a "sudden death" and do not plan on labeling it a homicide.

Meanwhile, investigators said they could not determine the time of death but said it appeared as though the man had lived in the area for months before he died.

Near his dead body, police found empty cigarette cartons, a bed, styrofoam food containers and soda cans scattered across the ground.

Up to press time last night police had not identified the man, but workers in the area said he was a familiar face in the area.
