Man shot in head after gambling feud

By STAFF WRITER ~ Guardian News Desk:

A man was shot in his head and other parts of his body last night following a dispute during a gambling game on East Street, police reported.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Leon Bethel, the victim and his assailant were reportedly gambling with other people when they got into an altercation. After an "exchange of words" the man believed to be responsible for the shooting reportedly left promising to return.

"He returned minutes later producing a handgun, fired several shots, hitting the victim once to the head, once to the neck and once to [another area] of his body," Bethel said. "The victim was seriously injured. He was taken to the hospital where he is now in critical condition and is being rushed to surgery."

Bethel spoke with The Nassau Guardian at 8:30 last night.

"We are in the process of trying to interview persons who can assist us in locating the assailant. We need to find this man with this gun so that we can bring him to justice and take him off the street."

Police are asking members of the public who have information on the shooting to contact them immediately.

"There was a number of persons in the area when this happened," Bethel said. "We're trying to locate some of these persons at this time."

Bethel said the outdoor gambling game was taking place on East Street just north of Coconut Grove Avenue.

The assailant reportedly escaped on foot.

Police did not identify the victim, but Bethel said police officers were at the hospital trying to get more information on him.
