Man killed during gambling game identified

By Staff Writer ~ Guardian News Desk:

The man who was gunned down on Monday night during a gambling game was identified as 36-year-old Dewitt Butler, police confirmed yesterday.

According to Assistant Superintendent Leon Bethel, Butler was shot in his head and other parts of his body around 8 p.m. on Monday following a dispute during the game. Butler reportedly died a short time later in hospital.

The victim and his assailant were reportedly gambling with other people when they got into an altercation. After an "exchange of words" the man believed to be responsible for the shooting reportedly left promising to return, ASP Bethel said.

"He returned minutes later producing a handgun, fired several shots, hitting the victim once to the head, once to the neck and once to [another area] of his body," Bethel said.

Police are still asking members of the public who have information on the shooting to contact them immediately.

Up to yesterday, Bethel said police have received a few tips.

"There was a number of persons in the area when this happened," Bethel said. "We're trying to locate some of these persons at this time."

Bethel said the outdoor gambling game was taking place on East Street just north of Coconut Grove Avenue.

The assailant reportedly escaped on foot.

Bulter's death brought the murder count to 37 for the year.
