Second relative testifies against murder accused By ARTESIA DAVIS, Guardian Senior Reporter, artesia@nasguard.com
Murder accused Michael Simmons gave himself up to police and admitted to stabbing his girlfriend, a police witness testified yesterday. Simmons, 23, pleaded not guilty to the murder of Trevonne McKinney, the mother of his baby daughter on March 4, 2007. McKinney was the daughter of media personality Steve McKinney. PC 2736 Ernest Mortimer told the court that Simmons showed up at the Grove Police Station around 1:45 a.m. on March 5. He told Mortimer that he had a fight with his girlfriend and had stabbed her. Mortimer said he arrested Simmons, put him in a cell and notified the Central Detective Unit. Simmons' uncle, Carlos Brown, told the court that his wife alerted him to the incident in front of his mother's home in Wilson Tract. He said he saw McKinney bleeding on the ground and decided to take her to hospital, instead of waiting for an ambulance. He said he saw Simmons later that night and asked him, "How he could do something so stupid?" Brown is the second relative to testify against Simmons. His grandmother, Gwendolyn Brown, testified when the trial began on Wednesday. Brown told the court that McKinney came to the home at Simmons' invitation. She said they had a private discussion in the bedroom. Brown said McKinney told Simmons that he had a problem and she asked him for her keys. She said Simmons threw McKinney to the ground as she walked to her Sport Utility Vehicle and started stabbing her. Brown said Simmons came to her window later that night and she advised him to surrender to police. The case resumes on Tuesday before Acting Justice Elliot Lockhart. Stephanie Pintard is the prosecutor. Simmons is represented by Dwayne Hanna.
