Shootings, kidnapping over Easter weekend By TENOVIA TROTMAN, Guardian Staff Reporter tenovia@nasguard.com A group of men were caught in a hail of bullets when an unidentified man fired multiple shots at them Sunday night. It was reported that the group of men were playing basketball on the court in Sunlight Village at around 9:20 pm when a white Nissan pulled up near to them. A man exited the vehicle and opened fire, hitting three members of the group. Jamaal Rolle, 23 years old, was shot in the pelvic area, 25-year-old Ryan Bonamy, a resident of Robinson Road, was shot in the back, and 32-year-old Rozsen Moxey of Gibbs Corner was shot in his right shoulder. Chief Superintendent Glen Miller said that at this point police are unable to say what the motive was for the shooting. Police also reported that a 38-year-old man was abducted on Sunday evening. Joshua Griffin was in a truck at the Texaco gas station on Independence Drive when he was approached by four men. One of the men entered the truck and told Griffin to take him to Marshall Road in South Beach. As the man entered Griffin's vehicle, he pointed a handgun at Griffin. Griffin took the man to his destination where he was forced to move engines from a boat. Griffin managed to escape and called the police. Supt Miller said that police are looking into the matter to determine what happened. Since the incident may be drug-related, he added, the Drug Enforcement Unit will be asked to help police in the matter. On Friday, April 6th at approximately 11:30 pm, a 30-year-old female was in a car with her boyfriend Achara McPhee in the area of Ferguson and Augusta Streets when a masked man carrying a handgun and running in their direction, fired shots at their vehicle. Mcphee was hit in his back and is presently in ICU. Chief Superintendent Miller reported that the female did not receive any injuries. Earlier that day, at around 5:39 pm, a cashier at Grand Central Hotel reported that two males entered the establishment demanding cash. The suspects fled the scene on foot with $236.00. No arrests have been made at this time. A second armed robbery took place At the First Caribbean bank on Shirley Street. It was reported that an employee of New Oriental Laundry had just finished making a deposit when he was approached by a man in a silver Honda Civic. The suspect produced two handguns, demanded the deposit bags and fled the scene with the empty deposit bags. A third incident of attempted armed robbery and burglary took place Sunday around 9:50 pm. Rochenel Olian, a Haitian national, who resides on Ethel Street reported that while he was in the front of his yard a male approached him and forced him into his house. Olian's girlfriend, who was in the house was able to call the police. Officers from the Mobile Patrol Unit arrived at the house shortly afterwards where they found that the suspect had locked himself in the bathroom. The officers arrested the man and upon searching him recovered a .380 pistol, loaded with five rounds of ammunition. The man was then arrested for burglary and armed robbery. Miller said that based on the incident, police will be looking into previous matters which fit the MO of the suspect. On Friday, April 6th at about 2:45 am a team of officers from the Central Detective Unit went to a house on Churchill Avenue where a 17-year-old was taken into custody. Later a 23-year-old from the Churchill Avenue house was searched and a .38 revolver was recovered with four live rounds of ammunition. As a result of that arrest both men were questioned on several armed robberies. Miller said that they were able to charge both men with six counts of armed robbery along with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Also on Friday, a 17 year-old-male was taken into custody after police officers from the Eastern Division received information that the suspect had possession of a weapon. Upon searching the suspect's house police found a bulletproof vest and a round of .40 ammunition. The suspect was taken into police custody. The officers of Quiet Storm arrested four men on Friday morning around 2:45 am. Police had received information that a firearm was in a house in Minnie Street. After conducting a search of the house, police found a .40 glock semi-automatic handgun. |
