Local support for U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama has moved one businessman to provide Bahamians with the ultimate way to show off that enthusiam a good ole fashion T-shirt.
"Bahama 4 Obama" and "Bahama Mamma 4 Obama," tees are selling like hot cakes for Bahamian entrepreneur John Henry Bostwick II. So good, in fact, his sister, Lisa, can point to customers of all ages, races and education.
"Most of the purchasers to date have been Bahamians ordering five to six t-shirts at a time," she told Guardian Business yesterday. "Obama is a craze in the U.S. and tourists are also a big part of his market."
She's hoping Bahamians soon won't be able to walk a block without coming face to face with one of Bostwick's creations. He's focused on selling them through stalls at the straw market and stores across town. The idea came to him while watching the election coverage that has kept Americans as well as Bahamians glued to their living room couches.
"There were a lot of news clips talking about Barack and Henry realized there was international and local interest in Obama," said his sister.
All copycats beware: Bostwick has made the move to copyright his crafty idea, blocking any move to duplicate his original.
His shirts start at $15, with price reductions for quantity buys.
His success with the Obama tees, doesn't necessarily preclude the production of T-shirts bearing his opponent's name. Still, Bostwick's unlikely to broaden his product range in that direction, argues Lisa.
"It's not as catchy," she laughed. "(Clinton) doesn't rhyme with Bahama."
